Charming 19th-century buildings for sale

South Orange is located in Essex County and allows an easy commute to Manhattan. Diversity is its most appealing characteristic, along with its notable rich and varied architecture.

85% of houses here were built from the 19th century to the 1930s. Montrose park hosts some of the most charming and magnificent houses, including Colonial revivals, Tudors and Victorians. The charm of this area – that is listed on the Register of Historic Places since 1997 – is enhanced by the presence of gas lanterns along the streets.

The historic register includes also some public buildings located around Prospect Street. In the Tuxedo neighbourhood there are smaller early 20th-century houses. Condominiums, rental apartments and luxury apartments can be found near the town centre.

On the hills climbing up the eastern slope of South Mountain, there are modern houses – mostly ranches and contemporaries – offering stunning views of the Manhattan skyline.

The only newly-built homes in South Orange are part of a complex called the Manors, which includes 62 luxury town houses and 6 detached homes.

In September, there were 103 houses for sale in South Orange. The supply included an 1890 three-bedroom fixer-upper that was sold for $ 164,900 and a six-bedroom custom-built house with a lagoon-style pool – its price was $ 1.299 million.

The average price of real estate properties sold from January to August in 2011 amounted to $ 524,900.

Buying a house in South Orange would be a value-for-money investment, as houses were built in the time frame when there was the best construction in America.
